ZERO carbon footprint

Climate change is a pressing issue, so we need to take action.

We will focus on reducing impacts at our breweries – eliminating carbon emissions through the use of climate-friendly technologies, and engaging our value chain to reduce our beer-in-hand carbon footprint.

Our targets

  • 0% carbon emissions at our breweries
  • 30% reduction in beer-in-hand carbon footprint1
  • 50% reduction in carbon emissions at our breweries
  • 100% electricity from renewable sources at our breweries
  • Eliminate use of coal at our breweries
  • 15% reduction in beer-in-hand carbon footprint
  • 100% low climate impact cooling
  • Partner with 30 suppliers to reduce shared carbon footprint

1 Beer-in-hand emissions refer to the full life-cycle carbon footprint of a product, taking into account value chain impacts beyond the Carlsberg Group’s operational control, such as agricultural production, transport logistics and retail refrigeration.

Brewing with tomorrow in mind

The journey towards zero carbon footprint starts at our breweries. That’s why we target 0% carbon emissions at our breweries by 2030, and the use of 100% electricity from renewable sources at our breweries by 2022.

To achieve our brewery targets, we will follow best practice in energy management, eliminate the use of coal and source only renewable electricity. Our approach will be to involve both direct investments in technologies like solar panels (read more about our installation in China) and market-based instruments such as certificates with guarantees of origin.

Working with partners for maximum impact

To maximise our impact, we need to work with partners to improve the parts of our products that are not directly under our control - such as agriculture and the packaging of our beers.

With this objective in mind, we aim to partner with 30 suppliers by 2022 and reduce our shared carbon footprint by 30% by 2030.

This will significantly reduce our beer-in-hand impact.

Our baseline carbon footprint

The targets set out in Together Towards ZERO are the result of our collaboration with the Carbon Trust.

Their expert analysis provided a carbon footprint of our operations and those of our value chain.

It showed that our breweries account for 14% of our carbon footprint, while packaging materials make up 40%, the largest share. Agriculture accounts for 17% and distribution for 14%.
